Guide on what to expect Tiger Cave Temple
THAILANDKRABI HIKESTEMPLE
Directions
The Tiger Cave Temple is easy to navigate to. It is located approximately 7kms outside of Krabi and is a 14minute drive.
If you google maps "Wat Tham Suea (Tiger Cave Temple), 35 Krabi Noi, Mueang Krabi District, Krabi 81000, Thailand" the exact location will appear.
You will likely need a cab or a moped to get there but both options should remain relatively inexpensive.
Background
The Tiger Cave Temple is a Buddhist Temple and is a sacred site. The name of the temple comes from the discovery of tiger paw prints on the walls of the cave.
It is known for its Tiger Paw Prints in the cave, tall buddha statue and of course its long 1260 stair climb with plenty of pickpocketing monkeys along the way.
The history of the Tiger cave temple Krabi dates back not too long ago to 1975 when a monk was meditating in the cave. During his meditation, he witnessed tigers roaming around the cave which led to the discovery of the temple Wat Tham Sua.
What to Expect
The Tiger Cave temple is a short but steep "hike" up. It has 1260 steps for an elevation gain of 300ft in 0.5kms.
Best time to come is early morning before everyone starts to show up. There is no entrance fees to this temple but donations for upkeep are always welcome.
On the stair way once you are at the lower-midway point of the hike be sure to keep your valuables in hand. you will see tons of monkeys and are not shy to jump on your back and open your bag as they know that's where they can find food and drink. (I had one take tooth paste from my bag and sit there watching me while eating it).
Once you reach the summit you can look around the surrounding area of the Tiger temple cave. It is stunning with mostly tropical rainforest. The huge limestone cliffs and many old trees are part of the Kiriwong Valley which you will look out on from the summit of the Tiger Cave temple. You can also see the city of Krabi from the view point.
Be sure to not miss out and visit the temple and cave at the base it is truly spectacular.
This is a very beautiful and culturally significant Temple. Ensure you dress appropriately when you attend Temples in Thailand as they do require a dress code of sorts.
If you get there early you will likely have to wait a little bit before the sun burns off the clouds fortunately it happens rather fast. Don't underestimate the hike to the top its definitely hot and humid!
